If you are looking for real estate on Hilton Head Island, Bluffton or anywhere in the Low
Country, you must consider the importance of a good porch.
Now, I am not talking about your run-of-the-mill, 4 foot wide piece of cement that extends from
your front door. The one you throw a few plants on and then forget to water them. When you
live in the Low Country, you need yourself a decent porch. Why, because you will be spending
a lot of time out there.
An ideal porch is a wrap around, screened in with some mighty fine mesh to keep out the
“no-see-ums”, and at least a couple of heavy duty ceiling fans to keep the air circulating during
those hot summer months.
I mean, where else are you going to keep your wooden rockers, cozy island style outdoor
furniture and cribbage board?
A porch in the south is like the kitchen table in other regions of the country. It is where you
welcome guests, share a sweet tea, cover the days events and share some secrets. In the
welcome coolness of October and November, you might spend a whole Saturday afternoon out
there, just people watching and daydreaming.
So if you can swing it, try to find a home on Hilton Head or Bluffton with a porch. And put a
swing on it. You will fit right in.
Still wondering what the heck no-see-ums are, aren’t you?
